Is Centre's job just to forward warnings, asks BJP's Sushma Swaraj

Is Centre's job just to forward warnings, asks BJP's Sushma Swaraj
New Delhi: In Parliament today, Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj was fiercely critical of the government for not being able to prevent last evening's terror attack in Hyderabad in which 16 people were killed and nearly 120 injured.

Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde updated Parliament on the terror strike with a brief statement that shared the death count. However, he did not refer to the intelligence alerts three days ago that had warned of a security threat in cities like Hyderabad. To journalists last night and this morning, Mr Shinde had said that information was shared with state governments.

"Is that where the Centre's responsibility ends?" Ms Swaraj asked. "Should you not have worked with the government in Andhra Pradesh to prevent the strike?"

She rejected the Home Minister's explanation as "routine" and said that while political parties must work together to combat terrorism, the "soft approach" of the government makes this impossible. "The country wants a commitment from all of us to fight terror," she said. (Read: Shinde's full statement in Parliament)

Mr Shinde has said outside parliament that "no intelligence was given that a particular area will be affected. A general alert was given in the past two to three days to the whole country."

NDTV has learnt that the intelligence alert this week listed Hyderabad on a list of cities that could see a terror attack. The warning also said that Pakistani terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Indian Mujahideen were reviving activities in India.

As far back as October, the Delhi Police had warned that Mujahideen members who it had arrested had confessed that they had surveyed Dilsukhnagar in Hyderabad for a possible terror strike upon the instructions of Riyaz Bhatkal, the founder of the Mujahideen. Despite that information and the intelligence warning this week, security was not stepped up at Dilsukhnagar.

Only man convicted of Suryanelli gang-rape takes on PJ Kurien

ThiruvananthapuramThe only man among a group of 35 who was convicted in the Suryanelli rape case has made a statement that could be pernicious for PJ Kurien, the Congress leader who is fighting allegations that he was among those who raped the 16-year-old school girl in 1996.

In 2005, the Kerala High Court acquitted 34 men of the rape of the teenager from Suryanelli in Kerala. A lawyer named Dharmarajan was convicted.  He was sentenced to five years in prison and was granted bail after which he went underground.

He spoke today to a Malayalam TV channel from an undisclosed location in Karnataka.

He said in the interview that in 1996, he drove Mr Kurien, who is the Vice Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, to the guest-house where the gang-rape survivor says she was assaulted by Mr Kurien.

Dharmarajan said that at the time, he was pressured by the Kerala Police not to testify against the Congressman.

Mr Kurien has been exonerated by the Supreme Court; he was not among the 35 men tried for the woman's rape by the Kerala High Court.  But over the last few days, the rape survivor has reiterated that the police did not investigate Mr Kurien long or hard enough because of his political clout.

Her allegations have been made after the Supreme Court set aside the Kerala High Court's order, and asked for a retrial of the rape case to be completed within six months.

The Congress has said that before parliament convenes on February 21, it will decide whether Mr Kurien should be removed from his Rajya Sabha office.

Last week, in an interview to NDTV, Mr Kurien said the charges against him are a political ruse and that multiple police investigations have cleared him in the case.

"I am the one who has been wronged. My conscience is clear and the case is a political one," he said.

SC Verdict on Afzal:

"The incident, which resulted in heavy casualties, had shaken the entire nation and the collective conscience of the society will only be satisfied if the capital punishment is awarded to the offender," .
